Clark Lake Yacht Club Sailing Update - Sept 11, 2008 - By Bruce Nowak
1) Mail Bag – “Labor Day weekend I got proposed to. Not a marriage proposal, I've been married for 57 years and I am still happy, but my skipper Bob Murray asked if I would sail with him again next year. So what is so special about a skipper asking his crew to return next year? Bob will turn 90 next month, October, and I will turn 77 in December. He bought new sails this year for us and we should use them at least two years. We sailed all the races this year except the ones when there were whitecaps and sometimes we started those and then quit after the first mark. We do very well, in fact we still manage to win a few each season. Our tacks are not quite as crisp as they use to be and Bob may fall sometimes tacking and for the first time since I started to sail I missed the hiking strap on a quick tack and did a flip out of the boat. It was the last leg of the last race of our regatta and we were ahead of Allan and Karel heading for the finish and there I was in the water. Allan said "Mom's in the water" and they took off and beat us. A strong kid on the rescue boat pulled me in. Bob and I are a good match we both like to compete and we give it our all. At one time Bob won our fleet championship ten years in a row and Andy Rundquist and I also won ten years in a row until Andy went to the MC. Come to our Regatta next year (June 2009) and we will show you how good and old pair of sailors can sail.”
Pat Vorel, GRYC PS: Bruce, do what ever you want with this article. See you in a few weeks at your Regatta, I will of course be sailing with Mary. 2) Thanks for the great story Pat and for attending CLYC’s Regatta to be held September 20th and 21st, 2008. We will have Rebels, Interlakes, Wayfarers, Snipes and Sunfish attending go to www.clarklakeyachtclub.org for the registration form. Brunch around 11, Noon Skippers meeting, then 3 to 4 races. We may need extra crews – almost always.
3) The CLYC Portsmouth Series continues Saturday September 13th, 2008 and will end on September 27th, 2008. The half-hour gun will be at 10:30 am with the start at 11:00 am for all boats. The Portsmouth Series is based on an International time rating for all one-design classes, so that scoring will be adjust for the time it takes to finish.
